  1. Learning Targets:
Students will learn vocabulary important to skill of overhand volleyball serve
Students will demonstrate skill
Students will evaluate their performance and receive feedback
Students will make goals for future growth of skill
  1. Relevance/Rationale:
Volleyball is a lifetime skill. Students will learn rules of the game, skills, and scoring throughout a unit in class. This lesson will focus on the overhand serve. Students will use these skills not only in class, but in real life situations as we live and play in a beach community.
  1. Formative Assessment:
Formative assessment is critical in performance based skills. Students will receive teacher feedback as they are practicing and performing skills. They will also receive feedback through the videotaping of themselves performing skills. Students will evaluate themselves, have the opportunity to evaluate each other, and also receive feedback from a college level player through a teacher created blog.
  1. Activities/ Tasks:
  • Teacher will demonstrate and discuss proper techniques and vocabulary that pertain to the overhand serve in volleyball.
  • Through drills, students will have time to independently practice proper techniques of the overhead serve.
  • Students will be videotaped practicing the skill for self evaluation and teacher evaluation.
  • As a homework/follow up activity students will critique themselves by watching a college level player demonstrate the proper technique for the overhand serve. They will then watch themselves on video and evaluate their own performance.
  1. Resources/ Materials:
  • Volleyball Court, net, ball
  • Flip Video Camera
  • Laptop with access to teacher created blog
  1. Access for All:
All students will participate in activity and can follow up with access to blog on their own laptops.
  1. Modifications/ Accommodations:
All students develop skills at a different rate.  The overhand serve is the end product of the lesson. The underhand serve is taught earlier in the unit and although all students are exposed to the new skill of overhand serving, students will differing abilities have the option of which serve they will use in a game situation.
Follow Up:
I think what I can add to this lesson/unit to make it more aligned with the common core is providing an informational article that students can read and demonstrate understanding through written response as well as their own performance.

Lesson overview of the overhand serve:

Each student was required to demonstrate the overhand serve during one of our class periods. During that time I was videoing each student for self analysis. At a later date I posted the video clips of my students on my class blog. For homework the students were required to watch their clip and compare it to a college students demo serve. They were to write some corrections that they felt they could make on the class blog. In addition a former student of WHB that is currently playing volleyball in college is going to blog the students and give some positive suggestions. I also included a rubric of what was expected of them for this lesson. I included my class blog link below for your review.

For my final project I am doing a video analysis of my students volleyball overhand serve. My students will review the video clip of themselves and discuss it on the class blog that I setup. I included a youtube clip of a college players serve for comparison. I am also in contact with a former graduate of Westhampton Beach High School who is currently playing in college and she is also making blogging suggestions and or corrections to my students.

Westhampton Beach is a district that has been ahead of the curve for over 5 years. After reading the article  "Making the Case for Social Media in Education" I believe that we need to lift or get rid of the way we filter what our students look at. By preventing our student from using social media as an education tool is hindering the learning process. Social media can and should be another tool that our students can use in the education process. However our school district and others need to develop more current ways to monitor student use. This can be a very powerful tool if used correctly. I welcome your thoughts.

During todays class we discussed the class book Truth, Beauty, and Goodness Reframed. The topic was "cyber morality". Todays youth are very comfortable communicating in many different way on the internet. Unfortunately they need to be more educated in Cyber Morality. Cyber bullying and trash talking are the norm for many kids. It is very easy to do this because there is no personal contact and or threat.  If the Cyber Bully were to be face to face as it was 10 to 20 years ago there would be less bullying because there is always the possibility of confrontation from the person being abused. I think the personal communication skills of todays youth is lacking because of the internet. It is a situation that we as educators need to always correct and be aware of. Our students personal communication skills will be as important if not more important then internet skills in the work force.

I have decided to change my project for this class. I have just created a blog on my school website and I videoed them doing the overhand serve in volleyball. I am asking my students to watch themselves and compare to a college serve. I have asked them to blog about their form and what they need to correct. I have also asked them to look at the other students and give some corrective criticism. I will also be reaching out to a professional or a college player to also take a look and give us some thoughts and or corrections. Let me know what you think. Any ideas would be appreciated.
